This session will give you a peek into the service basics of Office 365 including its benefits, limitations, security and costs.  We’ll take a look at Exchange Online, Lync Online and SharePoint Online as we try to lift some of the fog surrounding Microsoft’s latest big push.

Two Types of Application Pools in SharePoint 2010

Do you know that there are two types of application pools in SP2010? Let me explain.

First, SharePoint 2010’s application pools are different than SharePoint 2007’s both from IIS and SharePoint perspective.  In 2007, the application pools are all running in Classic mode and the Shared Service application pool (SSP and SSP2) are exactly the same as Web Application application pool.

In SP2010, application pools are running in Integrated mode. Compared to classic mode in which requests are routed through ASPNet_isapi the same way it did in IIS 6, in integrated mode, IIS uses the new request-processing pipelines of IIS and ASP.net.

Second, 2010 has two distinct types of application pools: one is used to host content web applications and the other is used to host Service Apps.  The PowerShell to create content web application app pool is New-WebAppPool, or via New-SPWebApplication –ApplicationPool <String>

image

By using the WebAdministration module, you have get all the application pool commands:

The PowerShell to create service app app pool is New-SPServiceApplicationPool. Here’s summary of these two types of application pools:

Content Web Application Pool

Service App Application Pool

Create

New-WebAppPool

(import-module webadministration)

New-SPServiceApplicationPool

Inherits from class

SharePoint.Administration.SPApplicationPool

(Represents an Internet Information Services (IIS) application pool.)

SharePoint.Administration.SPIisWebServiceApplicationPool

(Represents an Internet Information Services (IIS) Web service application pool in a server farm.)

Used by

Content Web Apps

Service Apps

(with PowerShell you can make this type of application pool be used by Content Web Apps)

Final note, even though it’s not possible in Central Admin (not supported), you can use a ServiceApp app pool to host a web appp:

New-SPWebApplication -Name "Test Web App" -Port 80 -HostHeader "test.he.com" -ApplicationPool "a691beaef23c4b9b9ccb0bfb9bdf7993" -ApplicationPoolAccount (Get-SPManagedAccount "he\SPAppPool")

Please let me know if this helps you. Until next time,  Wen

 Announcement

Aloha,

The SharePoint Saturday Honolulu organizing committee would like to sincerely apologize for the confusion during the prize giveaway at the close of the day. A volunteer (not an organizer or a speaker) held two winning tickets on behalf of friends, and we regret awarding the prizes in the absence of the true ticket holders. We thank all of you who attended for an otherwise incredibly successful inaugural event.

 SPSHNL Attendee Survey Comments

All I can say is that I was amazed that the event was free!! For the level of the material presented and the industry-recognized speakers, I would have expected there to be a significant cost for the event. Amazing!! Please keep bringing these events here! There is so much more to learn with Sharepoint!! Thank you so very much!!

Great event! It was one of the best one-day events I've attended, paid or not!

Great job, great energy. More workshops in Business Intelligence and using Sharepoint for strategic planning, please

I felt that the sessions gave the attendees (even me) some ideas to take back to their offices. And, I’ve been on conference organizing committees and appreciate the work that was done behind the scenes to allow us to show up for this event. It was very well run! Great job Committee!

Excellent mix of content and presenters, mahalo

The speakers were very knowledgeable about SharePoint and I liked the array of different approaches. All of the speakers (Charles Maxson, Virgil Carroll, Vance Morimoto, and Jamie Champagne with Michael Fors) I heard were excellent.

One of the sessions dealt with the SQL server as a bottle neck and he gave me a lot of the same information that I paid Microsoft for. It was a great value add for those who may not have the same funding as our company.

I appreciated the complementary lunch. Thank You!

Everything was perfect; excellent venue, host(s), and presenters; big mahalo for the giveaways, refreshments, lunch and prizes; presenters were on schedule and were knowledgeable and funny;
